C.S. Lewis and the Quest for Permanent Things
With Dr. Michael Macdonald

CS Lewis has an exciting and inimitable way of getting at those truths that all orthodox Christians have in common. In the 21st century it is more important than ever for Christians to stand together in the great cosmic battle between Good and Evil.  Major themes will include the centrality of Jesus, the significance of the cardinal and theological virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, faith, hope and charity), the role of the devil and the weight of glory.

Week II ~ July 18 through 24, 2010
C.S. Lewis and the Tantalizing Romance in Christianity and Art
With Dr. Michael Macdonald

This course will focus on the role of Romance in Christianity (emphasis on Hope, heaven, and CS Lewis’ Mere Christianity). To enhance Lewis' insights, NT Wright's recent book Surprised by Hope and examples from art will be discussed (Beethoven's 9th Symphony and literature, Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn).  Professor Macdonald’s thesis is that our greatest Desire is to go beyond the many times wonderful but ultimately unsatisfying world we experience through the senses to arrive at a world even more wonderful and permanent.

Week III ~ July 31 through August 6, 2010
C.S. Lewis: Apologist of the Head and Heart
With Dr. Jerry Root

Using information from many of the published works of C.S. Lewis, we will study his own spiritual development.  How C.S. Lewis came to faith
and grew in spiritual stature in the hopes that we might grow fully in Christ as well.
