FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: LIVING THE LEGACY C.S. Lewis Foundation Celebrates Tenth Anniversary, Completion of Oxford Study Centre, and Plans for "Oxbridge 98," the International C.S. Lewis Centennial Celebration REDLANDS, CA -- August 1, 1997 (CSLF) -- C.S. Lewis once remarked on the subject of miracles, "You are probably quite right in thinking you will never see a miracle...." He would have been amused to discover that, some fifty years later, something rather like a miracle is occurring in the very same rooms in which he penned those words. In what promises to be a special year of celebration of the legacy of C.S. Lewis, the C.S. Lewis Foundation of Redlands, California, led by its Founder and President, Dr. J. Stanley Mattson, is preparing to commemorate its 1Oth anniversary and launch the centennial of Lewis birth with a benefit dinner to be held on Saturday, October 25, 1997, in Newport Beach, California. The benefit, entitled "Living the Legacy," will be attended by Dr. Mattson, radio talk show host Warren Duffy and special guest Douglas Gresham, Lewis' step-son and the Foundation's Honorary Vice-President. Among the evening's highlights will be the unveiling of plans for the Oxbridge '98 centennial celebration of Lewis' birth as well as the inauguration of the C. S Lewis Study Centre in Oxford, a project which appropriately marks the culmination of a decade of the Foundation's commitment to the revitalization of Christian thought and expression within the secular university environment. With the assistance of more than 200 international volunteers during the summers of 1993-97, "The Kilns," Lewis' former home in Oxford, is being painstakingly restored to its former character and charm as of the 1930's and 40's. The Centre will house visiting Christian scholars and students from around the world as they pursue specific research interests and/or study at nearby Oxford University. The Foundation is also planning extensively for the forthcoming centenary celebration of C.S. Lewis' birth (1898-1998). Building upon the theme "Loose in the Fire" (inspired by chapter 3 of the book of Daniel), Oxbridge '98 will convene at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, England, from July 19 through August 1, 1998. This will be the fourth in a series of international symposiums celebrating the contributions of C.S. Lewis while challenging Christians of this generation with St. Paul's admonition to "walk worthy of the vocation to which you are called." The conference will offer lectures, seminars and workshops in the arts and sciences led by a world-class faculty. Invited speakers include: J.I. Packer, Earl Palmer, Madeleine L'Engle, Frederick Buechner, Annie Dillard, Walter Wangerin, Philip Yancey, and poet Luci Shaw among many others. Past conferences have included: Os Guinness; Richard John Neuhaus, Owen Gingerich, Thomas Howard, Peter Kreeft, long time friends and colleagues of Lewis, George Sayer and Owen Barfield, and Walter Hooper, editor and literary advisor to the estate of C.S. Lewis. In addition to rich opportunities for Christian fellowship, personal development and academic growth, the conference will offer numerous occasions for leisure and enjoyment. For scholars and students, artists and scientists, skeptics and seekers - Oxbridge'98 promises to be a summer experience that Lewis himself, looking on in wonder, might well have described as bordering on the miraculous.
