Happy Birthday Jack!

C.S. Lewis was born 112 years ago today in Belfast, North Ireland (November 29, 1898).  Happy Birthday Jack!

Here’s an excerpt from our brief biographical profile of Lewis:

Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a brilliant scholar, acclaimed writer, literary critic, and Christian apologist. He is particularly honored for his contributions in literary criticism, apologetics, and children’s and fantasy literature. Of his over thirty books and numerous essays (the majority of which have remained in print since his death), the most well-known are The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, and The Screwtape Letters. The Chronicles of Narnia series is especially popular and has been adapted into several plays, radio productions, and feature films. Most recently Time magazine listed the first book in that series, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, as one ofthe top 100 English language novels written between 1923 and 2005. Lewis’s works have been translated into over thirty languages and millions of copies have been sold worldwide.  His worldwide impact on the lives and faith of Christians and soon-to-be believers (many have been converted by his writings) has been nothing short of miraculous.

2nd Round of Oxbridge Postcard Images

After everyone’s votes yesterday and today, we are now down to the second round of images for the 2011 Summer Institute postcard.

I’ve placed them below in order of votes, and because all but the first one (which is the clear favorite so far) have almost an equal amount of votes, I’m considering a fun idea: going to print with 4 different versions of the postcard.

So the vote is different this time – now I’d love to know which 2-3 variants you absolutely would not want to pick!  Please comment below.

Vote on Summer Institute Postcard Designs

Hey all!  I’m working on getting our C.S. Lewis Summer Institute postcard ready and have been playing around with different ideas for the photo on the postcard.  After playing around with different ideas, I decided to post up some of the ideas on the blog to see what others have to think about them.

The images are all courtesy of Lauralee McKay of Expressions by Lauraleehttp://eblcards.com.

So which is your favorite? Comment below to cast your vote!

A Word of Grace – November 22, 2010

Dear Friends:

There is certainly every reason to desire such a gathering and to work to make it happen. At the heart of the Thanksgiving holiday is a celebration of the blessings of community and grace.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of the thought behind it. If there is “thanks” to be given then it admits to someone larger and more gracious who is responsible for my life and those I love. Gratitude is the ultimate confession of our need for God. Giving thanks is the primary obedience that he seeks from his children.

Jesus told us that we will live with him, held fast in his love and the love of the Father, if we keep his commandments (Jn 15:10).  There is no better way to do this than to “engage in the perpetual dialogue of gratitude” (Ellen Vaughn, Radical Gratitude [Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2005], p. 26).

In point of fact, being grateful is not optional in the life of the believer. Do you wonder what God’s will is for your life? Well, it starts with being thankful.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing; give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess 5:16-18).

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Col 3:15-17).

Yet, I know that the Thanksgiving holiday can be the most difficult of times because for many, too many, the promise of love and the thoughts of gratitude are shadowed by heart-sickening deferrals of hope and the assorted injuries of soul and spirit that result from human inadequacy to bear the weight of human expectations. 47th Anniversary of C.S. Lewis’s Death

C.S. Lewis died on November 22, 1963, just seven days shy of his 65th birthday on November 29th.

Today is the 47th anniversary of his death, the same day that President John F. Kennedy and writer Aldous Huxley died.

In “Living the Legacy” of C.S. Lewis, we at the Foundation don’t seek to idolize the man or merely to memorialize him, but rather see him as a model of someone who lived as a Christian in higher education and who used his imagination and intellect in the service of Christ.  Among many other qualities, he was ever-seeking, charitable, humble, and joyous.

Three areas Lewis often wrote and spoke about that particularly resonate with our mission are “Mere Christianity,” higher education/scholarship, and the world of creativity and imagination.  Whether it’s the founding of C.S. Lewis College, our Summer Institute at Oxbridge, the programs of The Study Centre at The Kilns (Lewis’s beloved home), or our conferences and retreats, it is these three areas that we seek to infuse into all of our work at the C.S. Lewis Foundation.
