FACULTY FORUM CONFERENCE

Rediscovering Evil:
A Challenge to the Academy

Kellogg West Conference Center, California Polytechnic University, Pomona

We invite you to join with Christian faculty, administrators, trustees, and graduate students from across the United States and Canada and from across the denominational spectrum for an engaging consideration of the implications of September 11th for the academic community, particularly with respect to a newfound openness to both acknowledge and address issues of good and evil.

The current situation provides fresh opportunities to offer constructive contributions at many levels. Our goal is to seek to explore all appropriate Christian responses to the current climate of fear, anger, confusion, and deep soul-searching.

The Forum concerns cut across political, theological and disciplinary interests and orientations to bring together a network of those of historic Christian faith, including Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox, from the political left and right.

“ …badness cannot succeed even in being bad in the same way in which goodness is good. Goodness is, so to speak, itself: badness is only spoiled goodness . . . Evil is a parasite, not an original thing.”
C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity, II, 2, para. 10

“Evil usually contains or imitates some good, which accounts for its potency.”
C.S. Lewis – Letters to Arthur Greeves, p. 176, L 17 Jan 40

~ Attending a Faculty Forum has made a real difference for other Christians in higher education ~

“The UCLA Forum was a valuable experience for me. I came away encouraged and challenged professionally, personally, and spiritually. I met people who were facing the same kind of issues and problems I do as a Christian administrator in a non-Christian University setting . . . . . Speakers, panelists and dinner partners shared personally how their faith is lived out practically in the classroom, in research, and in conversations with students. I was invigorated by their ideas, their Christian commitment, and their courage to stand, as C.S. Lewis did, for Christian values in the academic arena.”
Director of Graduate Studies, Cal State University

“The primary effect of the faculty forum was on my prayer life. I have always prayed over my teaching and calling at the university, but this challenged me to be more disciplined and more specific in praying for faculty, staff, administrators, students, Christian ministries on campus, and for other universities. The faculty forum was a tremendous encouragement and I hope that I can attend another one some day.”
Mathematics Professor, University of Puget Sound

“I teach with renewed confidence in the Christian philosophic foundations of much literature and the hunger of students to discuss those qualities. Further, I particularly connected with three people at the Forum and now am in touch with three people here, through my going there, and I am in touch with another conferee about a project. Thank you thank you!”
Lecturer in English, University of Kansas

"The C.S. Lewis Faculty Forum widened my sense of calling to embrace secular vocation as truly sacred when viewed through the eyes of Christ. I was challenged and inspired by such a gathering of faithful ambassadors for our Lord to the secular university.”
   Grad Student
