Engaging the Mind
Professor Jerry RootIn this seminar, Professor Jerry Root will guide his participants through the body of Lewis' published work, looking particularly at material that will enlighten and encourage each seminar participant in their respective pilgrim journey. In his literary critical work on Charles Williams' Arthurian Poetry, Lewis observed that a core problem in life is "to retain poetic vision in the midst of hard thinking, to study 'precision' in your highest poetry...." Certainly this was one of Lewis' deepest concerns. The first book he wrote after his conversion to Christ was "The Pilgrim's Regress: An Allegorical Apology for Christianity Reason and Romance." In his search to find how the life of the mind and the deep longings of the heart might find concord, Lewis came to the conclusion that only Christianity could unite them with integrity. What were the challenges he faced? What questions did he wrestle with? What kind of answers did he discover? In this seminar, Professor Jerry Root will guide his participants through the body of Lewis' published work, looking particularly at material that will enlighten and encourage each seminar participant in their respective pilgrim journey.
