Breakout Sessions
'Guns and Good Company'
Joel Heck
"Guns and Good Company" is the title of Chapter 12 in Surprised by Joy, which is an allusion to the challenge of enemies and the blessing of good friends. This session will look at the lives of three different men who thought a lot like Lewis, but stood in different relationships with him.
First, we look at the scientist J. B. S. Haldane, who served as the model for Weston in Perelandra. Then we learn about C. E. M. Joad, a philosopher who came back to the Christian church through the influence of Lewis. Finally we focus especially on Warren Lewis, whose life paralleled that of his younger brother in terms of returning to the faith and encouraging the task of writing.
A Complex Courtship: C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman’s Literary Love Life
Andrew Lazo
Perhaps no book more intrigues and frustrates Lewis readers and scholars alike as Till We Have Faces. In this breakout, Andrew Lazo will discuss the developing love between Lewis and Davidman and will also track the trajectory of Davidman’s integral role in the writing of Lewis’s last novel.
Drawn from original research from his current book project, Andrew’s session promises to intrigue, enlighten, and to help us understand the deep significance of how C. S. Lewis was truly surprised by Joy.This seminar will offer a comprehensive view of the
life and works of C. S. Lewis with a focus upon how his
imagination helped to shape his apologetics.
