We look forward to seeing you next week at Camp Allen!<br \/>\n<br class=\"blank\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The 6 P&#8217;s for the Workshop (well, there are actually 9 P&#8217;s, but you get the idea)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><br \/>\nPREPARATION \u2013 You don\u2019t have to plan to fail; all you have to do is fail to plan.<\/p>\n<p>PLAN \u2013 What do you hope to accomplish?<\/p>\n<p>PRESENTATION \u2013 Make a good impression.<\/p>\n<p>PREPARING &amp; PRACTICING your PITCH \u2013 Plan your time with our team of experts.<\/p>\n<p>PARTICIPATION \u2013 Are you looking forward to networking with other writers?<\/p>\n<p>PARTICULARS &amp; PRACTICALITIES \u2013 Details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PREPARATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>VISIT THE PRESENTERS\u2019 WEBSITES<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do your homework.<\/span><\/em> Visit their websites and read their blogs. Learn about them. Study what the agency sells and what the publishing house publishes. What authors do they represent? Are you a fit for them?<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Make the most of every opportunity.<\/span><\/em> You\u2019ll have a chance to visit with the presenters at meals, around camp, and at Bag End Caf\u00e9\u2014our after hours get-togethers\u2014and the Friday night reception. Those times are excellent chances to get to know our editor and agent before you pitch your book or idea in a consultation.<!--more--><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Learn about our presenters personally<\/span>.<\/em> Find out something you have in common to break the ice when you sit with them for a meal. <em>Examples<\/em> . .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Angela Hunt is a new grandmother.<br \/>\nCarolyn Curtis loves to travel. Reading books by speakers shows them you are interested in <em>them<\/em> and their work, and you bought their books. This will also help you in their sessions since you will already have a sense of what they are talking about.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First, two delightful books but very different in character . . .<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Won\u2019t it be fun to see these not-so-tame writers meet?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Not A Tame Lion<\/em><\/strong> by Bruce L. Edwards<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cLewis knew what it meant to be lost, and he knew what it meant to write stories that helped others to find hope.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Not A Tame Lion<\/em><\/strong> by Terry Glaspey<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201c[Lewis] shaped the thoughts, and thereby the actions, of countless people in his own time and afterward, mostly though the quiet influence of his books.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And a sampling by other presenters<em> . . .<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Unspoken <\/em><\/strong>by Angela Hunt<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cYet I\u2019d done exactly what a mother sending her child off to kindergarten would do\u2014prepare her youngster for a new and possibly frightening experience by painting it in the most attractive light possible. But I wasn\u2019t sending Selma to an innocent place like kindergarten . . . .\u201d <\/em>Selma is a gorilla<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A Man for all Nations<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Carolyn Curtis<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cAnd so it went in the life\u2014and death\u2014of Clyde Taylor. He served as the link between the Lord and people. Those who knew him were not surprised to learn that, even at his deathbed, the gospel was being shared.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>William Wilberforce: A Hero for Humanity<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Kevin Belmonte<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cThere was, Wilberforce confessed, \u2018much in the state of the world and church which I deplore, yet I am not among the croakers. I think real religion is spreading; and I am persuaded, with increasingly spread, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mere Christians<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Andrew Lazo<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cLewis taught me how to think\u2026.Until I read Lewis, I had never know how to combine the best thinking and the deepest believing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PURPOSE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is this writing life about?<\/span><\/em><strong> <\/strong>Are you just wandering into writing, flirting with the whole idea? To you we say: Relax. You\u2019re coming to be a sponge. Soak it all up.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want to become the best writer ever<\/span>\u2014<\/em>and published! How do they do it?<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want to pitch a book or idea<\/span><\/em>to an agent and editor.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want to network <\/span><\/em>with other writers<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want to get connected with the techno-world out there\u2014establishing a website and\/or blog<\/span><\/em>. You have lots of questions.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do you have a platform<\/span><\/em>? What is a platform?<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do you havet a tribe<\/span><\/em>? What is a tribe?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PRESENTATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want to make a good impression<\/span><\/em> on the editor and the agent.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You want them to want your book.<\/span><\/em> You can bring a manuscript but <em>do not bring it to your interview<\/em>. They will not ask for it. If they are interested in your work they will ask you to send it. It is very rare they will ask to read it.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bring a piece of your best writing<\/span><\/em> and share it at the Bag End Caf\u00e9. Many attendees will be present, so be prepared to share a brief excerpt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PREPARING &amp; PRACTICING YOUR PITCH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s your book about?\u201d<\/span><\/em> they ask. Work diligently on your \u201celevator pitch.\u201d (If you were in an elevator with an agent or editor and they asked you what your book is about, you need to tell them in the time it takes to go a few floors.) Condense your pitch to 25 words or less. Less is more. Come up with a nice juicy HOOK!<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Your 15 minute consultations<\/span><\/em> \u2014 Take a few minutes to explain your writing and to pitch your book or article idea. Leave the rest of the time for questions and their feedback.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Practice, practice, practice<\/span>!<\/em> This is hard work. But it will pay. Rehearse it. Record it. You don\u2019t want to waste their time or yours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PARTICIPATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The keyword is networking.<\/span><\/em> Besides rubbing elbows with our presenters, a gathering of writers is an opportunity to confer and trade stories with your peers.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do you have questions you are hesitant to ask a presenter?<\/span><\/em> Try it out on another writer first. We\u2019re all friends.
