With Thanksgiving only just behind us, we have had plenty to be thankful for at The Kilns in these late November weeks. Of course we recalled C.S. Lewis’ November 22 death, and more recently celebrated the 110th anniversary of his birth this past weekend. Our visitors continue to express their thanks as well for the work of Lewis’ writing in their own lives, and all of our guests and residents continue to enjoy the unique privileges of reflecting upon that legacy in their very surroundings. We are counting the blessings of an orderly home, healthy residents, and gracious guests, and we continue to pray that the house will find the right occupants as we begin 2009.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the season of sacred preparation and reflection is now upon us, and Advent will bring its own festive events to The Kilns. The Oxford C.S. Lewis Society will join us for their annual Christmas Party in the ambient Library, and friends of the C.S. Lewis Nature Reserve will also be gathering at The Kilns later this month. The Christmas cookie recipes are coming out in full force, and the AGA will be put to busy use in the coming fortnight.<\/p>\n
And Oxford itself is resplendent with Christmas decorations and “fairy lights” on its busy streets. College chapels welcomed Advent yesterday with a host of beautiful carol services. Mulled wine and mince pie are de rigeur even at faculty seminars this month, and even the end-of-term rush can’t quell the palpable excitement inside college walls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
